About This Game Through the dense fog our hero noticed a dark silhouette of a dark castle. Eventually his old rain-soaked map brought him to his target. He didn't have anything with him except for his favorite sword and remainings of an old armor with an unusual device – a sword-breaker. The hero looked around and stepped on the castle bridge... When I was younger, "Choose your own Adventure" books were a great source of entertainment. The stories probably weren't particularly great, but the endings always were. While there were always a few good endings - the kind where the protagonist saves the day/gets the girl/becomes a billionaire - most of the time he (or she) was killed. I call it one of the benefits of growing up in the 80s. Not only did your parents take you to see Robocop, but you also got to read books, where the authors thought up dozens of brutal and hilarious deaths for the main character. After playing through Swordbreaker, I'm feeling the urge to buy up a load of Edward Packard books. As the titular Swordbreaker, you'll enter a giant castle in the search of the greatest treasure. There's not much to say about the hero except that he reminds me of Dirk the Daring. What? You've never heard of Dragon's Lair? Well, just picture a hapless shmuck with a sword. As the player, you must lead Swordbreaker through the castle to his ultimate fate. Will you obtain the incredible treasure? Or will you suffer over 100 untimely deaths? Hmm..I guess you'll have to find that out on your own.The game begins with you outside of the castle. At every point, there are at least two decisions you can make. Sometimes these decisions lead to alternate routes, or they just lead to death. You get three lives and then you have to start over. This is done to encourage replay-value. The decisions are never changed or randomized in anyway, so as long as your memory is sound, you'll eventually make it through the castle. That said, it's worth taking the time to try everything, even if death is guaranteed. Some of the ways the hero meets his end are flat-out hilarious. They're not as imaginative as the stories I read growing up, but they're all illustrated and definitely brutal.Along the way you'll meet other characters. In these situations, you can choose to help them, kill them, or run away. This morality system determines the "good" ending you can receive. By "good" I mean an ending where you aren't viciously massacred in a humiliating fashion. You'll see what I mean if you pick this game up. The number of times the hero dies by tripping and falling is ridiculous. If he can't handle walking and running, maybe he shouldn't be an adventurer. Thankfully, these constant deaths are balanced out, by the fact that getting back to where you ran out of lives, only takes a minute or two.Once you've seen everything in this game, there's little reason to go back. Looking through the gallery is nice, but you can't expect anything in the way of replay-value. It takes a few hours to unlock most if not all of the scenes. Considering that the game is priced at $3, I think it's a fair value. If you're a completionist, getting the few remaining scenes can be frustrating. There is a map of the castle that tracks every scene, but it doesn't tell you how to reach every area. It might be worth the effort to jot down a few notes. The only other complaint is that the music gets old very quickly. On the bright side, I can catch up on my music backlog. There's only so much I can say about Swordbreaker without resorting to spoilers. If the concept interests you, then give it a look. You may discover that it isn't a terrible way to spend an afternoon or two. Swordbreaker The Game is a Choose Your Own Adventure novel with really good art style and ok soundtrack. The game offers tons of ways to advance the plot with different scenes that you will have to play through multiple times to unlock all of them, but it also means that you will have to memorize your previous decisions if you don't want to die at the scenes you played before. It's still fun for what it is, so I recommend it.. A choose-your-own-adventure where about 50% of your choices result in gruesome graphical death.Includes besides classic fantasy fare Aliens, cyborgs, murderous librarians, Freddy Kruger and SpongeBob.Takes about 2 hours for first run, enjoying it more if you try to find the many ridicilous ways for the Hero to die. Around 30m more for all endings. 4.4 hours for 100% completion using a guide in the end, finding last screens gets repetitive).Pro's:*Choices, lots of 'em*A LOT of (gruesome) art*Music is pretty good, even if just 4 tracks (menu, exploring, fighting, dying)*Many paths through the castle (though starting to lack a bit in the end *cough* Succubus *cough*)*Castle Layout mapCons:*English translation isn't too geat.*Layout map cant be accessed mid-game (long loading :/)*Gets repetitive getting near 100% (probably should have added +1 life per ending (up to 6) to help facilitate death-farming without excessive restarting)*If you cant handle gore, this is not the game for you.. I'm a simple manI see games you can play while eating in front of the computer...I buy !. Have you ever read the interactive book, in which you - from time to time - have to make a choice and go to the indicated page to progress further? This game is electronic version of this, except there is much more pictures and less to read. You go from one location to another and have few choices presented. Bad choices often make you lost one life, and when you lost all three it's game over and you have to start from the begining. And here comes the biggest flaw of this game for which I'm giving the negative opinion. I don't know, maybe I'm dumb, but usually I can't find a slightest hint in story what I should do to avoid the trouble and thus not losing my life. So in the end it's pure trial and error slugfest, and with neccesity to remember the correct answers for next gameplays (because you'll die even if you're lucky sooner or later) this game becomes a boring chore without slighest trace of engagement from the player.. I ate some Mushrooms and got killed by falling rocks.10/10. This game has a great art, but the story is lacking in every sense. We have Middle ages type of hero, magic, nuclear bombs, aliens, demons and princesses. Choices dont have really much sense, they are just trial and error kind, and you just have to keep starting over in order to get all the right ones, with no hint what might happen if you threw ypur sword for example.I would suggest for developers to get a better screenwriter, because this game has big potential that is wasted on crappy story. And lets face it, this kind of game is played mostly for story.. Fun CYOA with cool comic artwork. Worth replaying over and over to find all the endings and rooms.Ultimately quite a short experience - but well worth it for Comics/CYOA fans.. It is really an enjoyable "Choose your adventure" game with decent story, as well as audio and visual aspect.P.S - Sometimes is more "Choose your death than adventure", but oh well. :D
